Accident prevention. What a fun topic to kick off my Making A Happy Home From A to Z for April, right? Well, in our household this is always a hot topic. With three very lively and active kiddos, it seems like I’m almost always watching an accident ready to happen. I truly believe my 7 year old is incapable of walking – he runs, skips, flips, jumps and catapults everywhere. His 3 year old little sister is his shadow and is often right behind him and taking it up a notch.

Simple Steps For Home Accident Prevention

Here are some simple steps to share with your family to help prevent accidents in your home:

Everyday Safety Habits To Teach Your Family

• Do not overload electrical sockets. My older two are at the stage where all of their favorite gadgets require charging. Teaching them the safe outlet usage is a must! Head here for additional electrical safety tips for the home.
• Keep the handles of pots and pans on the stove turned inward so young children cannot reach them and pull them over.
• Little ones love to help in the kitchen, keep sharp knives, hot liquids and chemicals stored or safely out of reach.
• Invest in a more than one oven mitt or a great set of potholders and have them close to the stove and oven at all times because towels, t-shirts or other random pieces of cloth won’t cut it. (Don’t ask. Please. Thank you.)
• Check the temperature on your hot water heater. You don’t want the water so hot it will scald if your little ones turn on the faucet to wash their hands or give their favorite action figures a bath.
• Make accident prevention a part of your regular conversation and daily habits. That also includes anyone who drives as part of your household. A car accident attorney can be fairly common for drivers in their lifetime, so you must teach good driving habits before they leave home.

Home Safety Setup and Precautions

• Don’t attempt tricky maintenance jobs yourself. Electrical or plumbing work can be difficult, and if it goes wrong, there’s a potential for a lot of damage. The same goes for roofing and other work; it’s much safer to get a roofing company to carry this out for you. If you do attempt these jobs yourself, make sure you get someone else to help and supervise, especially if there’s heavy lifting involved.
• Do you have a climber in your household? Furniture straps for heavier objects keep them from tipping over if pulled on.
• Test your smoke alarms regularly and make sure your family has an emergency plan that includes how to leave and where to meet. I have my eye on this Vocal Smoke Alarm that can awaken children with the sound of their parent’s voice with instructions on how to leave and where to avoid. • Secure cleaning supplies, perfumes, and other items that are harmful if ingested or applied to the skin.

We have countless conversations regarding accident prevention in our home and having a well-stocked first aid kit is a must!

Having a well-stocked and easily accessible first aid kit is a must in our household. I have found them to be very easy to assemble and keep stocked. (I always keep an eye out for the clearance sections in drug-stores as they’ll often have items marked down significantly!)
