Anytime I made un-wise decisions growing up, I could count on a lecture from my Daddy that included the words “Wake up and smell the coffee!” Like clock work he’d say it and like clock work I would try to refrain from rolling my eyes or letting an audible sigh escape.
However, as an adult, it’s advice that I have found myself falling back on from time-to-time.
A Dream Deferred
by Langston Hughes
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore–
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over–
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
It’s time to wake up …
What is it that you want to accomplish? Is it opening your own business? Going back to school? Changing careers?
In order to realize your dream, you have to have to wake up and formulate a plan of action. How are you going to do it? When? Where? Why? Who will help? By starting with a plan of action, you are setting the foundation for your success.
In hindsight, I realize that my Daddy was speaking out of frustration at my lack of motivation and drive during my teenage years. Opting to take the easy route rather than putting in work and effort to do my best. Sometimes, okay quite a few times, letting my temper and smart-aleckness get the best of me and making choices that could have had long-lasting impacts.
“No dream comes true until you wake up and go to work.” Anonymous
