If you have spare time, what do you like to do? If you could design a dream day, what would the itinerary look like? If you have passions or interests, have you ever thought of trying to turn your talents into a career? At school and college, you’re encouraged to play to your strengths, so why not take advantage of your abilities and do a job you love every day?
Designing a business model
To succeed in any business, you need a strategy. It’s all very well being a wonderfully gifted artist, an incredible singer or a talented writer or photographer, but you need to put your business brain into gear. Most of us have hobbies, but to earn a living, you need to be able to make the transition from a pastime to a profitable job. It sounds too good to be true to make money out of something you love, but there are plenty of people who are doing just this. If you have a gift and the ambition to match, you could go far.
When you’re thinking about a business model, you need to work out how you’re going to use your talents to generate an income. If you’re an artist, for example, how are you going to ensure that people can view and buy your work? If you’re a writer, how are you going to get your name out there and encourage people to read what you’ve written? You may be thinking about hiring gallery space, starting a blog or hosting an event to showcase your masterpieces or your repertoire, for example.
You don’t need a lot of capital to start every business, but if you don’t have savings to cover the costs of your new venture, it’s a good idea to start it off as a side-hustle. This enables you to carry on earning, and it will also eliminate the risk of putting all your eggs in one basket.
Building a following
No matter what kind of business you’re running, building a following is essential, and the sooner you can get people interested in what you do, the better. If you start getting bookings or commissions, consider how are you going to manage your accounts or keep track of your schedule? It’s always good to have a base, such as a home office with access to verizon fios broadband, where you can focus on work-related tasks, get everything in order and connect with the people who are supporting you along the way. Social media is an incredible platform and having the ability to interact with audiences instantly is hugely beneficial. If your business relies on your talent, set up a website and ask people to leave feedback and reviews online. Once you’ve got a site and social media profiles, you can link them together and use strategies such as search engine optimization to move your name up the listings. If somebody is looking for a wedding band in the area, for example, you want your link to pop up at the top of the page.
Do you dream of being your own boss or doing a job you adore every day? If so, why not consider making money out of your talents and passions? You may not hit the jackpot straight away, but i you work hard, you have an effective strategy, and you can capture people’s imagination, you’ll get there. Good luck!
