Getting ready for college can feel overwhelming, especially when so many decisions happen at once. You are not the first person to face this challenge, and you certainly will not be the last. Okay, the first thing that we’re going to encourage you to do is choose your courses. You know what college you’re going to, so what courses are you going to want to take? Of course, there are some compulsory classes that you’re going to have to take in order to graduate, but most people don’t know what they want to major in when they start their college life. 

It’s okay to explore and to try out a range of different things before you finally decide, in fact we encourage you to do this as it opens up your world to a range of possibilities. But, that still leaves the fact that you need to work out where you want to start. Look at the course listings, sign up for classes, and make sure that you’re doing things that you think you’re going to enjoy. 

Job Or Loans?

As you’re getting ready for college, you need to make sure that you have a plan for how you’re going to live. We know that some people are lucky enough to be supported completely by their parents throughout their time at college, but if you’re not someone who is in this position, you need to look at whether you’re going to apply for loans or get a job. 

In some cases, you’re going to need to do both which can be a pain in the behind. But, waitressing is a common profession for those in college, and a lot of colleges also have employment opportunities to help you earn money while you study. 

There are also grants and things that you can apply for, but there is no guarantee that you will receive them. Do whatever you feel is right for you, and make sure you’re able to afford to live while you’re away from home.

Purchasing Books And School Supplies 

Okay so there are also books and school supplies that you’re going to need to purchase. Most college coursework happens online, so having a laptop makes studying and completing assignments much easier.

Many students also prefer typing notes because they stay organized and are easy to search later. However, you do not need to buy a laptop before classes begin. Pen and paper still work well for taking notes and completing assignments. If a laptop is not in your budget, use your college library or computer lab.

Most campuses provide computers and internet access for students. You will also need textbooks and course materials. Set aside money for these expenses because they can add up quickly during each semester.

Textbooks remain an essential part of many college courses, and they can be expensive. Plan for these costs early by setting aside money in your budget. Preparing ahead can help you avoid unnecessary financial stress once classes begin.

Finding Accommodation 

You’re also going to need to make sure that you have somewhere to live while you are studying. For the first year at least, colleges prefer that students who are not living at home live in student accommodation on campus. This is to make sure that they are integrating well, but also to ensure safety as much as possible. 

Look into the different accommodation options available, how much they’re going to cost, where you want to live, how far away the options are, and so much more. It’s true that most people who stay in student accommodation tend to stay there throughout their years, but there is an option to move off campus if you want to. As long as you have somewhere safe to live though, that’s what is most important. 

Accommodation Necessities 

No matter where you’re living, you’re going to need the essentials to ensure that you are comfortable there. You’re going to need to make sure that you have all of the necessary bedding, all of the correct laundry items, cleaning items, and more. If you’re living somewhere that has a kitchen and doesn’t have a dining hall, then you will need cooking equipment as well. Most colleges do have a dining hall though, so keep that in mind.

Packing Everything 

Finally, you need to get started packing everything so that you’re not leaving it all to the last minute. We know that it can be tough to start packing if you’re anxious, or if you are someone who simply isn’t very good with this, but it’s got to be done.

You don’t have to pack up your entire life seeing as you will be coming back here, but you need to make sure you have what you need. Write yourself a list to make sure you don’t forget anything, and then you’re ready for your new adventure.
