I’m striving to achieve a healthier lifestyle. I have noticed that one of my biggest “excuses” is not having time with the crazy schedule of my family to fit in exercising. For me, and perhaps many of you, exercise often feels like a chore but I realize it is something I need to do to keep fit and healthy. Movement on a regular basis can make a huge difference in the long term.
Here are three ways I have adopted to add a little extra exercise into my daily routine. They are simple ways to add a few extra steps and get your heart rate up a bit:
#1 – Walk The Stairs
If you live or work in a high rise building, you should learn to take the stairs more often. This simple little change can make a real difference. The first time you do it you might notice that you are out of breath by the time you reach your destination. Your legs will ache a little because they are not used to this type of exercise.
If you keep it up and only use the stairs, you will surprise yourself by how quickly you get used to the exertion. You will soon notice that it doesn’t take as long to get your breath back or to breath properly.
If you live or work in quite a high building then start off by getting out of the elevator a couple of floors earlier and use the stairs. Then you can add an extra floor until you are happy with your progress.
Even if you do not have stairs in your home or place of work, opt for them when you are out and about.
# 2 – Get Up From Your Desk At Lunchtime
It is quite normal for people to stay at their desk during their lunch hour. It is comfortable and you might want to catch up on your personal emails and social media. But you should seriously consider getting out of the office and using that that hour for exercise. It could be something as simple as going for a brisk walk around the block. Alternatively, you could look to see if there is an exercise, dance class or a gym session that you can take during that break.
This is the perfect time to fit exercise into your day. Once you get home , you do not have to think about it as a task that you still have to do. Use the lunch hour productively and get fit at your convenience.
I have a co-worker that goes to the gym everyday during her lunch hour. I was in awe that she found the time and made the commitment and has stuck to it for quite some time now. While that’s not a financial commitment that I am willing or able to make right now, I do use my lunch time to take a brisk walk at least three times…okay, two times a week.
#3 – Park Further Away From The Mall Entrance
This is something that everyone can do. It is so tempting to find the closest parking spot to the entrance of the mall. But if you park further away, you will force yourself to walk a few extra steps. It might not sound like such a big deal but if you have a mostly sedentary lifestyle, every single step really does count.
Health and fitness studies suggest that we should all we walking at least 10,000 steps per day. Invest in a pedometer and keep a log of the amount of steps you take throughout the day. Parking a few more bays away from the mall entrance could make all the difference.
These exercise hacks are things that everyone can do. Try one (or two or all three!) and over a period of time to see if you notice a difference.
