During those long days serving drinks behind the bar or clearing tables, it is likely that you dreamed about setting up a bar or restaurant of your own. With people working longer hours than ever before, there is an ever growing demand for places that serve food and drink.
Before you jump in headfirst, remember that a huge proportion of hospitality businesses fail within their first year. One way to make sure this doesn’t happen is to have a unique business approach.
Create A Plan
The first thing you will need to do is to create a detailed business plan with all the usual financial forecasts. Within this plan, you will also need to think about your unique selling points. Will you be serving a particular type of food that isn’t common elsewhere? Will you specialise in offering a unique range of cocktails? Will you set up a cafe that also doubles as a second hand bookshop? When you are coming up with your USP, also consider the target market that this is likely to appeal to.
Consider Your Theme
In many bars and restaurants, people are drawn to them simply because of the type of theme they have adopted. When you are deciding on a theme, think about how this will spread throughout your establishment including the decoration, staff uniforms and types of food and drink that you will be serving. Make sure to do some market research to find out how well your theme goes down with potential clients.
A Modern Approach
You may decide that the best way to draw people in is through the use of modern technology. Your staff could go round with iPads instead of notebooks. You could invest in the Impos POS system to streamline processes. Ultimately, technology should be there to make your business more efficient while also providing a unique selling point.
Create A Menu
Your menu is likely to make or break your hospitality business, so make sure you have put a great deal of thought and time into it. Make sure you have plenty of unique food or drink dishes. Even if you are just serving the classics, make sure to put your own spin on them. If you are serving food, don’t forget about vegetarians or people with specific food allergies. When you create the physical menu itself, ensure that it is attractive and easy to decipher.
Give Your Customers An Experience
People go to hospitality businesses with the expectation that they will be provided with a unique and memorable experience. Word of mouth is still the best way of attracting more customers. If people have had a good experience, they are more likely to tell their friends and even bring them along. Keep at the forefront of their minds by handing out business cards, free pens and other gifts that they can take away with them.
