You can’t have a happy home if it’s it’s dangerous for your children and your family. Believe it or not, your home could be a dangerous place without you even realizing it. There are issues that most homeowners are completely unaware of, and there’s a common example of this. A lot of homes with poor insulation develop damp patches and even mold around the windows in certain rooms. It’s particularly prevalent in bedrooms if you rarely open the window. Mold can be quite dangerous because the spores that it releases can get in the air. If breathed in these spores can cause breathing difficulties in young children and even some adults.
The problem is that many people mistake mold for dirt and as such don’t see it as a major concern. They might even leave it until it starts to look like an eyesore. By that point, the spores have probably already caused some damage. The good news is that you can get rid of mold from your home in two simple ways. First, get rid of excess condensation and water on the windows by using a humidifier. This will quickly soak up any excess moisture. Second, wipe the area where the mold is or has been with antibacterial spray. This should stop it from growing back. If you do this, your home will be free from mold in no time.
Of course, mold isn’t the only issue that might be present in your home. There are a few others that you need to watch out for.
Older Home Haunts
If you own an old home, there are two issues that you must get your house checked out for. The first is asbestos. Up until the late eighties, builders were using asbestos as a form of home insulation. They were completely oblivious to the fact that asbestos can cause mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. The prognosis for this form of cancer is not great, and it can be fatal if left untreated. One of the main issues is that signs can often take years to reach a point where they are noticeable.
You most likely won’t know if you have asbestos in your home but you will if it starts to cause an issue. The reason for this is that asbestos is only dangerous if it’s disturbed. At this point, deadly spores will be in the air. Usually, asbestos is discovered when renovation work is completed on a home. You can get a full inspection of your home organized by a professional company. They will check your home for asbestos and can even offer an asbestos removal service. However, you should be aware that this is often quite expensive.
The other problem in older homes is lead paint. A teaspoon of lead paint can be deadly to young children. So, if this is on your walls, you need to get it removed as soon as possible. Similar to asbestos, lead paint does need a professional removal team. It’s typically found in low-income housing areas.
Something In The Water
You might think your tap water is perfectly safe to drink and it should be. Unfortunately, research has shown that a number of water supplies in America contain dangerous chemicals. In some cases the water supply has been contaminated and when this happens your water company should take measures to fix the issue. In others, though, the water contains chemicals that supply companies add to the water themselves such as fluoride. Fluoride is used to keep water cleaner, but somewhat ironically, it is quite dangerous. If this is in your water supply in high levels, it can cause low IQ scores and has even been linked to brain tumors.
That’s why you may want to think about purchasing a water filter. You can fill this with bottled water to ensure a clean water supply for your children.
Of course, there is the possibility that the real danger in your home is actually outside of it, waiting to come in. We’re talking about intruders and with acts of violent crimes on the rise, it might be worth thinking about getting better security for your property. You might want to think about investing in reinforced glass windows. These can now be purchased for residential properties rather than just businesses. Alternatively, you may want to think about setting up CCTV around your home. With systems like this in place, you can set up your home as a deterrent. Criminals will think twice before even considering breaking in.
Take this advice, and you can avoid the dangers, keeping your home a safe, happy place.
