6 Ways to Increase Your Productivity at Home

As women we often face the difficulties of having successful careers and keeping a household together. This is why I decided to take matters into my own hands and start working from home, to save time. But how to stay productive with so many changes involved? I found these tips on how to improve productivity to be very helpful.

Personal vs. Professional

One of the hardest things for me was keeping my personal and professional life separate. First, I made separate email addresses and have different phone numbers for my business and personal life. I also have a room that serves as an office, but an area of a house will do just fine. Do not do anything related to your personal life while you are working.

Management

The key to success is great management of your time and tasks. I found it helpful to make a timetable of my to-dos for a week, but you can make it on a daily or monthly basis. I included room for breaks and tried it out for a few days before I was sure it worked. Since you are the manager of your own time, you can adjust it how you see fit, but make sure you follow it, otherwise it will be useless.

Distractions

Working from home includes all kinds of possible distractions, from doing chores such as the dishes, dusting, vacuuming, cleaning, to other pastime activities like reading and watching TV. This is why it is very important to not give into these distractions, since they might affect your work negatively. On the other hand, focusing on work might not leave you with enough time or energy to clean when you need to. This is why it would be best to get someone else to do the cleaning for you every once in awhile. I always use the services of Sydney house cleaning companies because they have professional cleaners and I can arrange to have them over whenever it suits me.

Keeping your home clean is important, but so is your office space and computer. If you, like me, deal with a lot of documents, both printed and in electronic form, make clear and labelled space where they should be. I also make specific folders and name them in a way I know what they are without having to open them, and avoid saving files randomly on the computer.

Doing work from home has affected other aspects of my life, like eating habits, sleep and exercise. You will lose track of time and sometimes forget to eat regularly or work-out and you might start losing sleep. To prevent this from happening, I use my phone reminders to remind me when to eat and work-out. But the toughest for me was the temptation of sleeping in.

Save time

I found that there are a lot of other simple ways to improve my efficiency. Uninstalling any potential distractors from the computer I use for work, taking the time to learn keyboard shortcuts that helped me get my tasks done sooner, and becoming an expert in any program I am using so I don’t lose time searching for solutions online. Multitasking hasn’t worked well for me either.

With today’s technology, working from home can be more beneficial than going to the office; it just takes a little discipline, and these suggestions will help your productivity.
